Grammar: Sentences and Relative pronouns

Simple sentence

A simple sentence uses just one clause. It has a subject and a  verb and it is a complete thought sentence.

Example:

Independent clause.

I play football every Tuesday.

Julia and Mike have been dating for six months.

Compound sentence

A compound sentence uses two or more independent clauses (simple sentence with subject and verb). Linked by linking words such as: and, because, so & but 

Example:

Independent clause + simple linking word + independent clause

I play football every Tuesday and I am the chairman of the drama club.

Julia and Mike have been dating for six months but they recently broke up.

Complex sentence

A complex sentence features at least a single independent clause (simple sentence with subject and verb) as well as at least one dependent clause (incomplete thought or sentence).

Example:

Dependent clause + complex linking word + dependent clause

John switched off the lights before he left.

Tarzan and Jane climbed the tree that they landed in after swinging from a rope.
