E.g.She said "He called me today" =   She told me yesterday that he had called her the day before.

4 steps in reported speech
  1. Take away quotation marks
  2. Backshift the tense
  3. Change personal pronouns + possesive adjectives
  4. Change the time indicators (today/the day before)

E.g.
She said "He called me today" =   She told me yesterday that he had called her the day before.

  1. We usually use a reporting verb (e.g. say, tell, ask, etc.) and then change the tense of what was actually said. 

  2. So, verbs in the present simple change to the past simple; the present continuous changes to the past continuous; the present perfect changes to the past perfect; can changes to could; will changes to would; etc.
