Questions
Als er een vorm van to be (am/is/are/was/were) in de zin staat mag je die vóóraan zetten om de zin vragend te maken. Dit mag je ook doen met de hulpww (can, could, will, would, must, may, might, shall, should):

There were a lot of people at the party.
Were there a lot of people at the party?
I can help you.
Can I help you?

Negations
Achter een vorm van to be (am, is, are, was, were) en hulpwerkwoorden (can, could, will, would, shall, should, must, may, might, have got) mag je het woordje not zetten. Vaak gebruik je dan de afkorting:
He can't come to the match on Saturday. 
We won't (will not) help you with that. 
There aren't any tomatoes left.

Negations
Als er géén vorm van to be of hulp werkwoord in de zin staat moet je een vorm van to do gebruiken om de negation te maken:

Present simple: don't/doesn't + infinitive
Past simple: didn't + infinitive

He isn't funny..
