In Christianity, there is a fasting period of forty days every year, leading up to Easter. However, eating and drinking still occur during this time. Only luxury foods like meat and candy are not eaten.

New moon
The calendar we use in the Netherlands is based on the sun. The Islamic calendar is based on the moon. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and lasts 29 or 30 days.

The fasting month begins when the first sliver of the new moon is visible. This can vary by country, for example, due to cloudy skies. Each year, Ramadan shifts forward by about eleven days. This is because months in the Islamic calendar are shorter.

Suikerfeest= Eid
Fasting lasts from sunrise to sunset. Children, as well as sick or very elderly people, do not have to fast. Some children participate for a few days to practice for later. After sunset, there is the Iftar. That is the Arabic word for 'meal.' Ramadan ends when the moon is completely full again. This is celebrated for three days with the Sugar Feast, or Eid el-Fitr in Arabic.

Many sweet treats are eaten to celebrate the end of Ramadan. People go to the mosque for the special Eid prayer. Families and friends invite each other to come and eat, and they wear their finest clothes.
