What is history about?

History is a subject that studies how people lived in the past.

To make things clear we put events in order : a timeline.

We also call this chronology. To put something in chronological order.

In the previous video you have seen what a timeline looks like.

Why is this timeline incorrect?

1. A timeline must always start with year 1
2. A timeline always has periods of 100 years.
3. A timeline always has divided periods of time of equal length .
4. The last year of every timeline is always the year we live in now.

Sometimes a number of years have a specific name:

A century is a period of  100 years. 

The 1st century is from the year  1 up until 100. 

The 2nd century is from the year 101 up until 200. 

The 3rd century is from the year 201 up until 300. 

The 16th century is from the year 1501 up until 1600.

Christian calendar

• Starts with the year 1 (careful: the year 0 does not exist!)

• Birth of Christ

• But...history doesn't start in the year 1 of course!

• BC = Before Christ, AD = Anno Domini, after Christ was born.

The ten time periods (tijdvakken)

• Created for education

• All start with: " The time of ..."

• They are not all the same length of time: Some are more than a thousand years, others just 50 years.

• Pre = before

• The time before people discovered script (writing).

Prehistory

• Prehistory did not end at the same time all over the world!

• When a people started to use script, their prehistory ended and their history began.

Sources from prehistory are always unwritten sources.
