a few a little

A few

A few betekent ‘een paar’ en ‘wat’. Je gebruikt a few voor woorden in het meervoud:

Would you like a few chocolates?

We have a few bags of chips left.

A little

A little betekent ‘een beetje’ en ‘wat’. Je gebruikt a little voor woorden in het enkelvoud. Het gaat om woorden die je niet in het meervoud kunt zetten, ontelbare woorden:

He put a little milk in his coffee.

There's a little sugar left.

Just put a little cheese on top.

few vs a few

Het verschil tussen 'few' en 'a few' is niet zo heel moeilijk. Few geeft aan dat er (te) weinig zijn, 'a few' dat er een paar zijn.

There are few chocolates left.

   - Er zijn weinig chocolaatjes over.

They have a few bars of chocolate.

  - Ze hebben een paar chocoladerepen.

little vs a little

Ook hier geeft 'little' aan dat er (te) weinig zijn, terwijl dat 'a little' aangeeft dat er een paar over zijn. Denk eraan: deze bij ontelbare woorden.

The cafeteria had little coffee. 

  - Het café had weinig koffie.

The bag contained a little tea.

 - De tas had een beetje thee.
