Passives

What is the function of the passive?

1. The passive puts emphasis on the action rather than the agent. 

2. It is used in broad statements about general opinions or social norms.

3. It is often used in formal and professional contexts (i.e. an essay).

What makes a sentence passive?

The combination of 'to be' + past participle makes a sentence passive

The woman is bitten (by the dog).

The wound was stitched (by the doctor).

ACTIVE= He is stealing a bike.

PASSIVE: The bike is stolen.

The Government is planning a new road near my house.
