Slide 1 - Slide

During our last lessons we talked about closed questions

Today I want to talk to you about asking OPEN questions

Slide 2 - Slide

This item has no instructions

also known as WH words

Slide 3 - Slide

in today's lesson
  • We will be learning about WH words (20 minutes)
  • We will learn how to use them (20 minutes)
  • We will use them to get the information we need (FUN & GAMES) (20 minutes)

Slide 4 - Slide

If I want to know more about this person, I need to ask open questions. Can you give me a few examples?

Slide 5 - Slide

This item has no instructions

Can you give me more WH (question) words?

Slide 6 - Mind map

gemiddeld zullen studenten er 5 a 6 kunnen noemen
There are 9 main forms of the WH words.
First of all, there are 8 who actually start with WH:
* who
*what
*why
*where
* when
* which
* whose
* whom

Slide 7 - Slide

Then there is one that has a lot of different forms and doesn't even start with WH:

*how (+measurement)
if we use how, we are looking for a way or a degree

How did it happen?

How damaged is the car?

Slide 8 - Slide

How + Measurement
why does this one have many forms? because we are looking for a number:

how much/many
how long
how come
how far
how old
etc.

Slide 9 - Slide

  1. Who
  2. Whose
  3. What
  4. Which
  5. How                     (+measurements)
  6. When
  7. Where
  8. Why
  9. Whom
  • a person
  • possession
  • things or an unlimited choice
  • limited choices
  • a way or a degree                (including measurements)
  • a moment in time
  • a location somewhere
  • a reason
  • asking about people ( very formal)

Slide 10 - Slide

Drag the correct translation to the right spot

This game has 6 simple rules:
1.  You must use a WH question!
2. After each question, the person who asked the question may take a guess.
3. You score a point if you guess correctly.
4. You may give a different answer compared to your card, as long as it is correct.
5. If you don't know the answer you must answer: I don't know!
6. After every correct guess, the cards go to the next person.
