Themes in literature
A theme is an idea in literature that is told to us through the text. Stories can have several themes at once.
An example of a theme or idea is "friendship".

Let's try to find the themes in this poem!
(Red Brocade by Naomi Shihab Nye)
“The Arabs used to say,
When a stranger appears at your door,
feed him for three days
before asking who he is,
where he’s come from,
where he’s headed.
That way, he’ll have strength
enough to answer.
Or, by then you’ll be
such good friends
you don’t care.”

Interpretations
Literature can be experienced and felt in different ways.
Themes can be related to what the book is about but also what you feel.
Stories and poems feel different for everyone reading it.
