Why did the Greeks have Olympic Games?

1. Because they really liked sporting
2. To train for wars
3. To honour the Gods

Why would the Greeks offer something to Poseidon?

Greeks had many stories about Gods. How do we call these stories?

Greek theatre

• Stories about the gods: tragedies 
• But also about politics and philosophy: comedies

Philosophy

• Socrates: Asking difficult questions about life
• For example: "What is a good life?"
  
• Plato: "What is reality? Are we able to see reality?"
• Some people did not like the philosophers, because sometimes they doubted if the gods exist!

Greek science

• Not only believing in gods, but also research!
• Pythagoras: calculating sides of a triangle (mathematics)
• Hippocrates: illness caused by 'bad liquids' (medicine).
• Archimedes: buoyancy: how and why do boats float? (physics)
