The first thing people will see when going towards a mosque is its
large, ornate tower, called the minaret. These are used by the muezzin to call the people to prayer.
The second most noticeable feature of most mosques are their often
intricately patterned domes. As Islam originates from very hot countries, these have the useful effect of keeping the mosque cool. They also remind Muslims that the whole universe belongs to God.
This is a small alcove in the qibla wall of the mosque that points in the
direction of Mecca. Muslims will pray towards the qibla wall.
The minbar is a pulpit (a special raised platform) in a mosque where the Imam (leader of prayer) stands to deliver sermons.
This is the wash room or absolution area which is used for muslims to wash before praying.
The cresent moon and star is a symbol of Islam.
The Qur'an is the holy book of Islam.
A mosque will be filled with prayer mats. When muslims pray they always face the direction of Mecca.
Muslims take their shoes off at the entrance and leave them in a shoe rack.
