Past simple vs. past continuous
  • At 4 pm last Tuesday, I was working in the office.
past continuous, because you want to emphasize that the action/event (= work) was in progress around a time in the past and were not finished.

  • At 4 pm last Monday, I finished work early and went home.
past simple, because you want to emphasize that the events happened at a definite time in the past and were finished. Emphasis is on the whole of the events, not on an ongoing event.
