Grammar: Could & couldn't

• Na 'could' gebruik je altijd het hele werkwoord
• 'Could' heeft twee verschillende betekenissen:

1. Kon(den):

"Eric could run faster than this brother"

(Eric kon harder rennen dan zijn broer)

2. Zou(den) kunnen:

"Could you help me, please?"

(Zou u mij kunnen helpen?)

Short answers

• In het Engels antwoord je nooit met alleen "ja" of "nee", je gebruikt een kort zinnetje!
• In deze korte zinnetjes herhaal je het eerste woord van de vraag:

"Are they ready?" -> "Yes, they are." / "No, they aren't."
"Is Jack late?" -> "Yes, he is." / "No, he isn't"

Activity: Who Am I?

• Make a pair or group of three
• I will hand out sticky notes
• Come up with a person or thing, and write it on the other person's sticky note
• Try to guess what is written on your sticky note
• And use the short answers we just discussed!
