Wat is indirect speech?

Iets vertellen aan iemand

wat jij of een ander gezegd heeft. 

De hond kijkt schuldig op naar zijn baasje en zegt: "Ik zal niet meer op de bank springen."

Indirect speech

Je gebruikt dit als je wil vertellen wat iemand anders heeft gezegd:

Jason: "I'm reading a very good book."

Jason said (that) he was reading a very good book. 

Tony: "My mum isn't home yet."

Tony said (that) his mum wasn't home yet. 

Hoe maak je 'indirect speech'?

1. Begin je met degene die het zei.

'Patrick asked if...'

2. Gebruik je altijd een verleden tijdsvorm van zeggen. 

'Patrick said/asked/told/spoke....'

3. Ga altijd een stap terug in de tijd.

Indirect speech

Je gaat altijd een stapje terug in de tijd (want je vertelt het later):

Direct: present simple --->                  indirect: past simple

Direct: present continuous: --->        indirect: past continuous

Direct: past simple --->                         indirect: past perfect

Direct: present perfect--->                  indirect: past perfect

Het veranderen van persoonlijke of bezittelijke vnw.:

- Carter says, "I'm going to call him this afternoon."

- Carter said that he was going to call him in the afternoon.
