Is globalization new? 

Today, you will investigate if globalization is a recent phenomenon and what the role of colonization and decolonization is in the globalization process.

First, read the text on p.  8 about the the question: Is globalization new?

On the next slide, answer the questions. 

We can argue that the world has become more interconnected throughout the past centuries. How do you think the following inventions (See also Figure 1.5 on p. 8) have affected the connectivity around the world?

A very important facor in the history of globalization is colonization and decolonization. 

Read G210 Colonization and decolonization and answer the following questions. 

At which age did globalization began? Give the name of this age and give the centuries in which this period approximatly took place (look it up online).

Is globalization new? 

Since the age of exploration, many countires in Asia, Africa and Latin America have played a role in the worldwide economic system. Europe dominated this system. This system gave rise to a contradiction between the core and periphery.

Following the colonial area, the former colonies played the same role until this day. You can refer to this process as neo-colonialism.
