Past simple vs. present perfect vs. past perfect

• Past simple: I walked to school this morning.
• Present perfect: I have walked to school since I was 5.
  
• Past perfect: I walked to school after I had eaten my breakfast.
  

Past simple vs. present perfect vs. past perfect

•  Past simple: Onderwerp + ww + ed (of onregelmatig)
  
• Present perfect: Onderwerp + have/has + voltooid deelwoord
  
• Past perfect: Onderwerp + had + voltooid deelwoord
  

Past simple vs. present perfect vs. past perfect

• Past simple: Wanneer een actie in het verleden begonnen en geëindigd is.
  
• present perfect: Wanneer een actie of toestand in het verleden begonnen is en nog voortduurt (of nog steeds relevant is) of wanneer het niet belangrijk is om te weten wanneer iets gebeurde.
  
• Past perfect: Wanneer twee acties in het verleden aan elkaar gekoppeld worden.
  
• Past perfect = eerst. Dan Past Simple: When they got to the gate, the plane had taken off.
  

The Passive

• Active sentence: The car hit the tree
• Passive sentence: The tree was hit (by the car)

• Wanneer het niet belangrijk is wie de actie uitvoert kun je de passive gebruiken.
  
• Je gebruikt het lijdend voorwerp van de actieve zin als onderwerp van de passieve zin.
  

The Passive:

• Present simple passive = am/is/are + voltooid deelwoord

• Past simple passive = was/were + voltooid deelwoord

Active: They take the photos.
Passive: The photos are taken (by them).

Active: I did my homework. 

Passive: My homework was made (by me).

Let goed op in welke tijd de zin staat!

Possessives

•  Use: when you want to say that something belongs to someone

    Three ways to do it:
    1. noun + 's: It is Jane's book
    2. noun + ': Your parents' opinion is important.
    3. ... of ... : He scored the first point of the match.

1. 's

•  Na zelfstandige naamwoorden die over mensen of dieren gaan (enkelvoud). My brother's book is on the table.
•  Na zelfstandige naamwoorden die over mensen of dieren gaan in het meervoud die niet eindigen op -s. We must respect people's rights.
• Eigen namen, zelfs als ze op -s eindigen. It is Tess's book.
  
• Winkels: We are going to the baker's.

•  Wanneer een meervoudsvorm van het zelfstandig naamwoord wel eindigt op -s.

•  I'm cleaning my cats' litter box - Ik ben de kattenbak van mijn katten aan het schoonmaken.

• Wanneer je het hebt over dingen:
  
• Put your bike at the back of the house.
•  Wanneer je het hebt over geografische locaties:
  
• John lives in the city of New York.
