Slide 1 - Slide
Climate
The average weather measured over a period of thirty years is called the climate.
Slide 2 - Slide
Climates in the world.
Take a look at source 5 in your textbook on page 28.
We have 5 main climate classifications:
1. Tropical
2. Desert
3. Continental
4. Maritime
5. Polar
Slide 3 - Slide
Low latitudes
Areas around the equator are at low latitude. You can find a tropical and a desert climate at low latitudes.
Slide 4 - Slide
Tropical
It's never colder than 18 degrees Celsius in this climate.
Because of the warmth water vaporizes quickly from land and sea. Therefor it rains almost everyday.
Slide 5 - Slide
Desert climate
A desert is a very dry place. On average there is less than 250mm rainfall.
Example: Atacame desert had no rainfall for 400 years.
Slide 6 - Slide
High latitudes
High latitudes are areas that are closer to the North and South pole.
There are bigger differences in temperature in these regions, therefor we have seasons in these places.
Slide 7 - Slide
Continentale climate
A continental climate has no influences from the sea. Because of this the summer temperature is high (30 degrees) and in the winter it's minus 18 degrees.
Slide 8 - Slide
Maritime climate
We have cool summers and mild winters. This is because the sea has an influence on the climate. In this climate you'll mostly find broad-leaf trees.
Slide 9 - Slide
Polar climate
In summer the temperature barely reaches 0 degrees celsius.
Here, snow and ice cover the bottom, preventing plants to grow.
