  • Delete repetition -> John wants to buy an Iphone. He also wants to buy an smartwatch. He wants to give these to his girlfriend tomorrow. ----->


  • Add adjectives/adverbs/modifying clauses (giving details/describing how) -> a brand-new Iphone, the latest smartwatch, he really/desperately wants to, his new girlfriend, the guy (who was) standing next to me


  • Form gerunds (verb + ing as subject/object)-> He likes staying up late and watching TV; 


  • Think out loud -> does the sentence flow well/sound ok? SVOPT (subject/verb/object/place/time)

Add information to the sentence (adjectives, adverbs, modifying clauses)
Gives the reader details of who/what/how/when/where


John bought a car.

John, a young teen (WHO), proudly (HOW) bought his first (WHAT) car.

The surprised (WHO) tourist suddenly (HOW) spotted Elvis eating a hamburger  (WHAT)   at the corner store (WHERE).

The American (WHO) tourist surprisingly (HOW) spotted Elvis singing his heart out (WHAT) at the heartbreak hotel (WHERE)

Sentence combining puzzle
1) They are both teenagers who want to become successful in different ways.

2) John wants to be a successful entrepreneur, and Boyan is someone who wants to be successful in cleaning up the ocean and saving the water species. (38 words)



Can you combine the two sentences into one and use another linking word (but, also, whereas, although etc.)? 
Look for words that refer to the same or are the same. 
Look for a linking word that describes contrast.

A) Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should have done their duty

  • Intro - general info on Harry & Meghan, ending in the thesis statement "Prince H. and M.M. should have done their duty."

  • Paragraph 1 - First argument + examples (Harry is a British prince and sixth in line to the British throne)

  • Paragraph 2 - Second argument + examples (Meghan has married into the royal household and should now also accept her duty and the sometimes negative press.)

  • Paragraph 3 - Third argument + examples (The British public pays taxes to support the royal family, so they have a duty to the public.)

  • Conclusion - Repeat arguments/strongest argument and the thesis
