Herhaling: Plurals

Plural nouns

noun + s

Plural (= meervoud) - exceptions

• Singular (=enkelvoud) words that end with y, get ies in the plural form

lady --> ladies

• Singular words that end with a consonant (= medeklinker) + o, get oes in the plural form

tomato --> tomatoes

• Singular words that end with f or fe, get ves in the plural form

calf  --> calves

life --> lives

Hoe maak je meervouden in het Engels?

De algemene regel is:

Zet een -s achter het zelfstandig naamwoord.

Voorbeeld:

One boy --> two boys

One apple --> three apples

One house --> four houses

Onthoud: nooit 's! 

Woorden die eindigen op medeklinker+y

Natuurlijk zijn er uitzonderingen op de algemene regel.

De uitzonderingen zijn: 

1. Eindigt het woord op medeklinker + Y --> meervoud wordt -ies

Voorbeeld: 

One hobby --> two hobbies

One story --> three stories

Woorden die eindigen op een s-klank

2. Eindigt woord op -s, -ss, -sh, -tch, -x --> meervoud wordt -es

Voorbeeld:

one business --> two businesses

one wish --> two wishes

one witch --> two witches

one box --> two boxes 

Woorden die eindigen op f(e)

3. Eindigt het woord op -f(e) --> meervoud wordt -ves

one knife - two knives

one wife - three wives
