• Recent events in the United States have made this novel all the more relevant. 
• As Starr says: "People like us in situations like this become hashtags, but they rarely get justice"

Setting

The setting of a novel is the time and place in which the story takes place. The setting provides the backdrop to the story and helps create mood.  

The setting of The Hate U Give is Garden Heights, a city neighborhood in the southern part of the United States somewhere in the 2010's. 

Portfolio 1: Explain the importance of the setting of The Hate U Give. In your answer, include clear examples from the novel that help create mood.

Narrator 

The novel is written from a first-person perspective, through the character of Starr who refers to herself as ‘I’.

Portfolio 2: Explain the effect of the 1st person perspective of the novel. How would the novel be different if it were written from a different perspective?

The title of the book is a reference to THUG LIFE, an acronym for "The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everyone". This acronym was made popular by American rap artist 2Pac.

2Pac is known for his rap music, poetry and activism against inequality. 

Portfolio Assignment

• give your interpretation of this poem or song
• explain how the content of the poem is linked to The Hate U Give 
• show off your poetry analysis skills by explaining the use of at least 2 different literary devices in this poem & song (remember to mention the effect)
