RELIGION
Engeland heeft een staatskerk. CHURCH OF ENGLAND of ANGLICAN CHURCH. De Engelse monarch is het hoofd van de kerk (HEAD OF THE CHURCH). Bestaat sinds 1534 toen HENRY VIII brak met de paus (omdat hij niet mocht scheiden van CATHERINE OF ARAGON).

RELIGION
De CHURCH OF ENGLAND is protestants met veel katholieke elementen: priesters, bisschoppen. Er zijn twee aartsbisschopen (ARCHBISHOP): van Canterbury en York.

Schotland heeft een eigen kerk: de CHURCH OF SCOTLAND of PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, gebaseerd op het Calvinisme. Er zijn geen priesters/bisschoppen maar MINISTERS

BANK HOLIDAYS: sommige maandagen waarop banken en andere winkels dicht zijn. De meeste mensen hebben dan een dag vrij (May Day Bank Holiday = eerste maandag in mei, Summer Bank Holiday = laatste maandag in Augustus)

BONFIRE NIGHT/GUY FAWKES' NIGHT: jaarlijke viering in (voornamelijk) Engeland) m.b.t. buskruitverraad dat plaatsvond op 5 november 1605. Het complot werd verijdeld.
Om te herdenken dat koning  James I de aanslag overleefde worden elk jaar vreugdevuren (bonfires, waarbij een stropop van Guy Fawkes,  leider van het complot, in brand wordt gestoken) en vuurwerk (fireworks) ontstoken.

ARMISTICE DAY/REMEMBERANCE DAY/POPPY DAY: 11 november.
Herdenking van gestorven soldatn in beide wereldoorlogen. Een 'poppy' is een klaproos.
