Clothes can be made from natural things that grow.

Cotton, linen and bamboo are all made from plants.

Cotton is grown in warm countries, such as China, India and the United States of America.

Linen is made from flax and is a fabric that people have made clothes from since ancient times.

It is stronger than cotton and dries more quickly.

Trousers, shirts, skirts, shorts & dresses can all be made from linen.

Bamboo is a large grass and a soft fabric can be made from its fibres.

It is often used to make underwear and socks.

Clothes can also be made using animals.

Materials such as wool, leather, fur and silk all come from animals.

Wool is made from animals such as sheep, goats and alpacas.

It is used to make jumpers, socks, gloves, skirts, coats and dresses.

Wool is good for keeping us warm in cold weather.

Silk is a soft, breathable material produced by silk worms.

Silk is very comfortable to wear.

It is used to make many items of clothing, such as scarves, tops, dresses, pyjamas, underwear and socks.

Fur is very good at keeping people warm in really cold temperatures.

It is made from many different animals, such as foxes, rabbits, minks, sables and chinchillas.

Many people think that killing animals for fur is cruel but people in very cold countries say that it is the best thing to keep them warm.

Most leather is made from cow hide.  

Leather is a strong material that is used for shoes, boots, coats, trousers and skirts.

Clothes can also be made from manmade materials, such as nylon and polyester.

These are made using oil.

Nylon is strong and waterproof.

It is used for raincoats, swimsuits and skiwear as well as tights, underwear, dresses and cycle wear.

Polyester can be used to make most different types of clothing.

It is used to make football strips as it does not trap sweat and heat.
