''Be a fly on the wall''

Meaning:

To watch something happen without anyone knowing you’re there.

Example: 

Nico wished he could be a fly on the wall when his sister discovered the toad he’d left in her shoe!

Listening H1

Audio and video

Als je gaat (kijken en) luisteren naar video en audio, geldt altijd:

• Luister geconcentreerd en laat je niet afleiden.
• Iets gemist > opnieuw luisteren of herhaling
• Video? > let op lichaamstaal en beeld. Belangrijke informatie:                        interesse, verbazing, blijdschap, irritatie, enzovoort.

Journalisten en nieuwspresentatoren geven hun verhaal structuur door gebruik te maken van signal words.

Signaalwoorden geven bijvoorbeeld aan dat iets belangrijk 

is, of dat er een tegenstelling of een opsomming volgt: 

First, second, ... en finally.

Reading H3

H3: Magazines and the news

Magazine: longer articles on a range of subjects

Periodical pub. weekly or monthly. Subject for a specific audience.

News: Short articles on current news and developments

Daily or weekly pub. + important source of reliable international, national and local information.

Reading H3 B1

An article can be about any subject, a current event, someone's life, the outcome of scientific research etc.

It contains a lot of information, but not all of it is equally important. 

Article

Main issues: Directly related to the subject of the article. Main themes or arguments.

Side issues: provide additional information, such as              examples, details or exceptions.

Paragraphs devide the text into subtopics and organise.

Each paragraph has a key sentence = summary.

Main subject

• Lees kop + eerste alinea: waar gaat het volgens jou over?
  
• De eerste alinea is meestal een minisamenvatting van de rest van de tekst.
  
• Lees de rest van de tekst om te checken. 
• Is er een rode draad? Let op kernwoorden > betekenis opzoeken
• Slot: belangrijkste zaken vaak nog eens genoemd.

Arguments

Arguments are used to support a statement or opinion. E.g.:

Author's statement:

The BBC documentary ‘The Mystery of Van Gogh’s Ear’ is really sensational ...

Argument (why the documentary is 'really sensational'):

... because it finally solves the mystery of what happened              to the painter’s ear.

Reading - CNN

Lees het artikel van CNN volgens de opdracht:

• Arceer de woorden die je niet kent
• Wat is de ''main subject'' van de tekst?
• Noem minimaal 2 ''side issues''
• Onderstreep de ''key sentence'' van elke alinea.
• Noem 1 ''statement + argument''.

Werk in tweetallen:

Deel je antwoorden met elkaar. 

Zoek samen de betekenis van de woorden die je niet kent.

Bekijk de video en let op het volgende:

• Waar gaat de video over?
• Wat zie je aan de beelden en lichaamstaal?
• Noem minimaal 2 signaal woorden

• Wat is je opgevallen?
• Is er een verschil?
