TO BE + Subject + Rest
  • I am a teacher. --> Am I a teacher?
  • You are happy. --> Are you happy?
  • She is a police officer. --> Is she a police officer?

On the next slides, we'll practice rewriting sentences using TO BE as questions.

Word order in questions using 2+ verbs
Verb 1 + Subject + Verbs 2+ + Rest
  • I would like to go to Albania. --> Would I like to go to Albania?
  • You have called your mom. --> Have you called your mom?
  • My dog can run for hours. --> Can my dog run for hours?

On the next slides, we'll practice rewriting sentences using 2+ verbs as questions.

Word order in questions using the helper verb TO DO
DO/DOES/DID + Subject + Verbs 2+ + Rest
  • I work at the hospital --> Do I work at the hospital?
  • She goes shopping on Fridays. --> Does she go shopping on Fridays?
  • They drove to work. --> Did they drive to work?

*Only change the form of TO DO; keep other verbs in their base form. 

On the next slides, we'll practice rewriting sentences using TO DO.

Question word + QUESTION (use whatever format fits your verb(s)!)
  • How are you? 
  • Where are you going? 
  • What did you say?
  • Who do you think is the cutest?

Lesson summary
  • For sentences using TO BE or with 2+ verbs, switch the subject and the (1st) verb. 
To be + Subject + Rest? --> Are you a singer?
Verb 1 + Subject + Verbs 2+ + Rest --> Can you see the board?

  • For sentences using 1 verb (present simple / past simple), use the helper verb TO DO & keep other verbs in their base forms.  
DO/DOES/DID + Subject + Rest --> Does she work here?

  • For sentences with questions words, put the Q word in front & use word order based on verb
Q word + Rest of question --> Where are we going? What do you see?
