Slide 4 - Slide

General pointers
To help you out!

Slide 5 - Slide

Which reading strategies do you know?

Slide 6 - Mind map

Do you start by reading the questions or do you read the text first?
A
Questions first
B
Text first

Slide 7 - Quiz

Read the questions first
  • Begin altijd met het lezen van de vragen, niet met het lezen van de tekst
  • Terwijl je door de vragen heengaat lees je toch al de tekst bij het beantwoorden
  • Scheelt tijd

Slide 8 - Slide

When do you look up a word in the dictionary?

Slide 9 - Open question

Dictionaries
  • Kijk eerst: betekenis uit de context?
  • Dan: is het woord essentieel voor begrijpen vraag/tekst?
  • Alleen als dat zo is zoek je het woord op
  • Woorden opzoeken kost veel tijd. Je kunt dit niet te vaak doen.

Slide 10 - Slide

How much time do you have per question on the exam?

Slide 11 - Open question

Do you normally bring a marker
to reading tests?
A
Yes
B
No
C
No, but I know I should

Slide 12 - Quiz

What are things you
should highlight?

Slide 13 - Mind map

Highlighting information
  • Exam idiom (signaalwoorden)
-> Answers often can be found near them
-> Show the connections between paragraphs and within the text
-> A colon (:) is often also a pointer: examples or clarification follow it

  • Names and phrases
-> Of people or companies you're on the lookout for,
-> Or sentences mentioned in the question you're answering

Slide 14 - Slide

Which texts (numbers) in the exam are the most difficult?

Slide 15 - Open question

Exam structure
First few texts: easier (often, first 2 texts are very short)
Middle texts: hardest (usually longest too)
Last few texts: easier (last text is usually a scan text - you don't need to read everything)

Slide 16 - Slide

First steps with every text
  • What's the (con)text about?
  • What's the tone/'grote lijn'?
  • Check if questions provide you with extra information

Slide 17 - Slide

Reading strategy:
open questions

Slide 18 - Slide

Slide 19 - Slide

3 types open vragen
  • Citeren (ENGELS)
  1. Woord
  2. Zin
  3. Zinsdeel
  • Zelf formuleren (NEDERLANDS)
  • Verwijzen alinea (nummer)

Slide 20 - Slide

Citeren
  • Staat letterlijk in de tekst
  • ALTIJD IN HET ENGELS
  • Zinsdeel:
‘...fans at the training session alerted staff…’
Let op dat je bij een zinsdeel alleen het relevante deel van de zin citeert,
dus niet een volledige zin! Teveel citeren = fout.
  • Eerste twee + laatste twee woorden:
‘The champion… of trophies’

Slide 21 - Slide

Zelf formuleren
NEDERLANDS!!
-> Geen punten voor in het Engels antwoorden
-> Laat dus ook niet een (paar) woord(en) onvertaald!

Lees je antwoord nog een keer na en check of hij echt te begrijpen is.
