Grammar - Future in the past

When James was 5 years old, he thought he 1. ____________ (become) a firefighter. Things turned out differently, however. Instead of becoming a firefighter, he began training because he 2. _____________ (be) a professional footballer.

There’s one moment in particular that was important. When he was 11, he 3. ______________ (sign) a contract with a top football team: Manchester City.
