1. The tone of the remark is humorous. It is a joke.
2. They don’t have anything else to do (line 13).
3. soldiers/ combat gear/ rifles/ trenches/ military (trucks)
4. It refers to the city of Sloviansk (line 51).
5. It provides the reason why the teenagers remain in Sloviansk.
6. After a strike which does not hit the teenagers, they act in a silly way. This is how they deal with a scary situation.

11. a. He wants his daughters not to write about the war (line 1) nor of misery (line 8). Neither does he want them talk to others about the war (line 11).
 b. He probably wants them to be happy and it hurts him to see that their life is being overshadowed by the war. Apparently, his daughters have been writing about the war and all the pain it causes them. In lines 7-8 he writes that he would like nothing more than to take out all the sorrow (mental pain) from their letters. He tries to do this by shifting their focus to the everyday beauty around them and invites them to be happy about the small things they see and experience.
