1. Gerund

Gebruik de -ing vorm (smoking) van een werkwoord als zelfstandig naamwoord:

• als onderwerp.
• na voorzetsels.
• na werkwoorden die zeggen hoe je iets vindt (e.g., like, hate).
• na werkwoorden die begin, einde of doorgaan aangeven (e.g., start, give up).
• na een aantal andere werkwoorden (zie Grammar Survey p. 15).
• na een aantal uitdrukkingen (zie Grammar Survey p. 15)

2. Direct object plus infinitive

Het lijdend voorwerp plus het hele werkwoord = I would like you to take notes.

Gebruik je na de volgende werkwoorden (bevel/wens): would like, would love, would prefer, would hate, want, mean, expect, ask, beg, tell, order, force, warn, invite, remind, persuade, teach, and get (persuaded). 

Na let, make en werkwoorden die waarnemingen aangeven (smell/hear) lijdend voorwerp plus hele werkwoord ZONDER to = I heard the book fall.

1. I remind you ___________ (to invite) him to your birthday-party.

2. to invite

2. It is no use ____________ (to talk) to him. He will do what he wants anyway.

3. _____________ (to smoke) is bad for your health.

3. Relative clauses

Betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden = koppelen zinnen aan elkaar.

Gebruik:

• who/that = personen
• which/that = dieren/dingen
• whose = bezit

Bij een bijzin tussen komma's = ALTIJD who of which.

Adjectives:

Bijvoeglijke naamwoorden:

• Zeggen iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord: 

Ex.the careful driver, the angry teacher, a beautiful dress.

Let op! Soms twee vormen: 
   This job is boring / interesting / tiring / annoying (= over ding)
   I am bored / interested / tired / annoyed (= over persoon)

Adverbs:

Bijwoorden:

• Zeggen iets over werkwoorden en bijvoegelijke naamwoorden.

Ex. she drove carefully, it rained heavily, incredibly quickly, surprisingly easy

Adverbs maak je MEESTAL door -ly achter het bijvoeglijk naamwoord te  zetten  (quick > quickly, 

                  careful > carefully)

Uitzonderingen:

• Je gebruikt ook adjectives i.p.v. adverbs bij werkwoorden zoals be / feel / look / taste / sound / smell / seem

Ex. I am tired, she is hungry, you look tired, you smell nice.

• Een aantal adverbs maak NIET met -ly: 

   good > well          the good dog, you did well
   fast > fast           the fast car, he ran fast                 ('hardly' =
   hard > hard          the hard test, he tried hard          nauwelijks)
