Past simple or present perfect?
  •  Lisa has been my friend for five years now
  • I saw Star Wars last week
  • I used to read a lot, but nowadays I usually watch TV

Past Simple + Present Perfect: when?

  •  Past simple: When an activity started and ended in the past
  • Often you use an indication of time (Yesterday, last week etc.)


  • Present perfect: When an activity started in the past and is still going on
  • When it just finished
  • or when the focus is on the result of an activity.
    • Words that indicate present perfect: always, never, ever, (not) yet, already, just.
