2nd hour: Practice speaking
Lesson goals: At the end of this class you will be able to explain what modal verbs are and use them in a sentence.
At the end of the class you will be able to use verbs signalling "moeten en willen" in a sentence.
How?
By listening to an explanation and doing some questions together.

Modal verbs
  • Does anyone know what modal verbs are?
  • What if I say that they are words that can show ability, permission, advice, obligation or a possibility? What words come to mind?
  • Can you spot the modal verb in the sentence?
  • I can help her

Slide 3 - Slide

Modal verbs: Can/could/be able to
  • You can use can/could/be able to when you have a the ability to do something:
"I can help help her/I could help her/I was able to help her. "
  • You can also use can/could when something is possible:
"I can be cold in here"
"It could rain tomorrow"
  •  You can use could have when something was possible in the past, but it did not happen:
"You could have phoned me"

Modal verbs: Be allowed/may/might
  • You can use be allowed, may and might to show or ask for permission.
"I'm allowed to buy a new bike"
"You may look around"
"Might I open the window?
  • May and might can also signal possibility.
"What he says may be true" and "He might be at home"
  • You can use might have for something that could have been possible in the past but that did not happen
"You might have fallen!"

Modal verbs: Must/have (got) to and should
  • Must, have (got) to and should can signal obligation.
  • Must and have (got) to are strong, almost like an order:
" I must do my homework" and "You have (got) to do your homework"
  • Should is not as strong and can also be used for giving advice:
"I should do my homework"
  • Must can also be used for a logical result:
"You must be very ill" " He must have forgotten"

Auxiliaries: want, make, would like, mind, willing
  • These verbs all show to some degree that you want something.
  • For an assignment or an order you can use want somebody to + infinitive or make somebody + infinitive:
  •  "He wanted me to write a letter"
  • "He always makes me work hard"
  • Make is stronger, it is done by force.

Auxiliaries: would like
  •  You can use would like + infinitive for a friendly request:
  • "I would like you to come, too."
  • "Where would you like us to meet?"

Auxiliaries: Mind + Willing
  •  You can use the verbs to mind and be willing when you are okay to do something.
  • Mind + verb + ing: I don't mind helping you
  • Or as a question: Do you mind getting that for me?
  • Be willing to + infinitive: She is willing to help.
  • Or as a question: Are they willing to help us?

  •  This might seem difficult, but you will probably be able to do this already, so we will do some questions from of course together.

You get a sentence:
I started to dread arithmatic back in the third grade because I ... (wilde niet) to memorise the multiplication tables.
Step 1: Read the sentence.
Step 2: Which verb do I need?
Step 3: Which tense is the sentence in?
Step 4: Fill in the correct form.

One mandatory exercise
  •  To practice the presentations I want everyone to record at least 5 minutes of their presentation and share this with a classmate for feedback. (Also send the link to your VoiceThread to me!)
  • We will do this using VoiceTread.
  • In voicethread you can upload your PowerPoint and record yourself over your PowerPoint.
  • You can also give written or spoken feedback through VoiceThread.
  • On the website you can find the assignment, a tutorial and the pairs in which you will be working together.
