Watch the film and try to find at least 5 uses of the modal verbs 
can, could, might and may.
Make a note of them.

In the example above can is used to express ability. 
In the example below can is used to make a general statement about what is possible.

Like all modal verbs the verbs 
can, could, might and may 
are followed by the infinitive without ' to'.

Modals of Possibility + infinitive with 'to' 

Use could, might or may to say that something is possible but not certain.
We use can to make general statements about what is possible.
Notice the difference in meaning between canmay/might/could.
  • It can be complicated being an alien.
  • Sometimes it's complicated being an alien.  I know.
  • It could/might/may be complicated being an alien.  
  • Perhaps it's complicated being an alien.  I don't know.
