Combine the verb with the right tense and use

Past simple

• Verb + -ed or irregular verb
• als iets in het verleden is gebeurd (en geëindigd);
• als iets in het verleden regelmatig is gebeurd (gewoonten).

Vaak staat er een signaalwoord in de zin, bijvoorbeeld: yesterday, last night, in 2012 enzovoorts:

I left home early yesterday.

When I was little, we always dined out on my birthday.

Past continuous

• was/were + verb + -ing
• als iets in het verleden een tijd duurde / aan de gang was. Vaak staat de past continuous dan in één zin samen met de past simple;
• als iets in het verleden regelmatig gebeurde en dit je irriteert. Vaak staat er dan een signaalwoord in de zin, bijvoorbeeld: always, constantly, forever, all the time

Examples

Sam was watching a film when we came in.

Sam zat een film te kijken toen we binnenkwamen.

Those girls were always teasing me.

Die meisjes waren me altijd aan het plagen.

Present perfect

• Have/has + verb + -ed / irregular verb
• als iets in het verleden is begonnen en nog steeds gaande is (signaalwoorden: since October, for five years);
• als iets in het verleden is gebeurd en de nadruk ligt op het resultaat nu (signaalwoorden: so, because);
• als iets in het verleden is gebeurd, maar het is niet duidelijk of belangrijk wanneer precies;
• - als iets zojuist (een korte tijd geleden) is gebeurd (signaalwoorden: already, just, today enzovoorts)

Examples

The band has released two albums since 2016.

Justin has broken his arm, so he can’t perform tonight.

I have heard this song before, but where?

Elvis has just left the building.

De band heeft sinds 2016 twee albums uitgebracht.

Justin heeft zijn arm gebroken, dus hij kan vanavond

niet optreden.

Ik heb dit liedje eerder gehoord, maar waar?

Elvis heeft het gebouw zojuist verlaten.
