De Twin Towers van het World Trade Center in New York stortten in bij de terroristische aanslagen op 11 september 2001 nadat twee door terreurorganisatie Al Qaida gekaapte Boeings 767 door de kapers in de 110 verdiepingen tellende torens gevlogen werden. 

Bij de aanslagen op het World Trade Center kwamen 2.763 mensen om het leven, waarvan meer dan 2.000 burgers in de torens en hun omgeving, 343 brandweerlieden, 62 politiemensen, 147 passagiers en 10 kapers. 

1.647 lichamen werden reeds geïdentificeerd, maar van 1.106 mensen (veertig procent van de slachtoffers) is de identiteit nog onbekend.
