When do you use them?

Past simple
We use the past simple to describe:

  • Actions or events in the past                                                            
  • Actions or events which happened one after another 
  • Things which happened over a long period in the past

We use the past continuous to describe:

  • An activity which started before and continued until an event in the past

Reading and Use of English Part 3
  • In Reading and Use of English Part 3, you read a text of 150-160 words with eight gaps and one example.
  • In each gap, you write the correct form of the word given in CAPITALS at the end of the line.
  • In the test, the words will be a mix of nouns, adjectives, adverbs and verbs. Some of them might need a prefix, e.g. un-.
