  • Present continuous is used to express things we are doing now or soon

  • The "formula" is:
  • Subject + to be + verb-ing
  • To be: am, is, are

  • I am helping him with his homework.
  • You are driving to Manhattan as we speak.
  • She is drinking coffee.
  • They are playing cricket in that field.
  • We are watching a movie in this Cineplex.
  • Kim and Dave are reading various kinds of books.

Spelling exceptions
  • Sometimes you have to make changes before -ing

  • My friend is making dinner (make).
    I am living in Seattle (live).
  • --> ends on an -e?
  • Delete -e + add -ing

  •  They are lying to me (lie).
  • James is tying his shoelaces (tie).
  • --> ends on - ie?
  • Change -ie to -y +-ing

  •  Lars is travelling across Denmark (travel).
  • Ends on an -l (L)?
  • Double it!

Spelling exceptions
  • I am swimming (swim).
  • Lydia is chatting with Mike (chat).
  • Mike is dipping his fries in hot sauce (dip).
  • It is beginning to make sense (begin).
  • Sound change alarm!
  •  Verbs that end on a consonant - vowel - consonant combo 
  • (medeklinker - klinker - medeklinker)
  • --> Double the last consonant!
  • Not for verbs that end on     -w or  -x!
  • E.g. snowing + fixing
