Rule 1: Verb to be (am, are, is, was, were ) or can, could, may, might, would:
?  you place that verb at the beginning of a question. 
-   In a negative sentence, you place not/n’t after that verb.

--> Can you read the sign over there?

Rule 2: Other verb? Add to do
?  You place a form of to do at the beginning of a question. 
-  In a negative sentence, you place not/n’t after a form of to do. The main verb changes to the infinitive (hele werkwoord)
--> Did he tell you about our trip?
