How we build sentences using the right kinds of words.

Let's look at the following sentence:

The cat sat on the mat.

Sentence structure
  1. the subject (pronoun or noun) comes at the start:
    The cat is 11 years old.
    He walks to school.

  2. the verb(s) comes after the subject:
    She works every day.
    John likes Mary.

3. the object = who or what the subject does something to.
     the object comes after the verb(s)
     He walks to school.
     John likes Mary.
     I work at a school.
We can find out what the object is when we make the sentence a question:
Where does he walk to? - school
Who does John like? - Mary

Time goes at the beginning or the end of a sentence:
I start working around 8 o'clock.
Around 8 o'clock, I start working.

Place goes at the end of the sentence, but before time:
I start working at school around 8 o'clock.
Around 8 o'clock, I start working at school.
