Elizabethan theatre (1562-1642)

  • Elizabeth I, Queen of England (1558-1603)
  • The first English theatres were built
  • Lord Chamberlain's men: company of actors for  
     which Shakespeare wrote. 
  • Richard Burbage: main actor, played all the leading  roles.
  • Going to theatre was very popular
  • The Globe theatre.

The Globe

  • Built in 1598
  • Outside of London        
    no control of city officials (who didn't                                                  like theatres)
  • All of Shakespeare's plays were performed here
  • Burned down in 1613, during the play Henry VIII
     (a canon was fired and set fire to the roof)
  • Could take up to 3000 people
  • All sorts of people visited
