Goals
  •        I will identify a relevant local issue: what problems affect my local community?
  •        I will collect relevant information about this issue: what research methods can I use and what questions should I ask?
  •        I will evaluate data: what biases can I identify and how reliable are my sources?
  •        I will analyze information: what causes the problem and which consequences need to be considered when finding a suitable solution for this problem?
  •        I will organize my research in a graphic organizer: how can clearly communicate my research conclusions?
  •        I will reflect on my research process: what have a I learned and what can I do differently/better next time?

Solutions
Today we will start looking at possible solutions

Fixing the Problem
To solve a problem, you must understand the cause of the problem. A good solution should address the root of the problem.
Look at the roots of your problem tree and compare these causes to all of the solutions from your research.

--> Write down as many possible solutions.

Slide 5 - Slide

Answer the following questions

  1. Rework old methods and strategies.
  2. How can you use the input from your LP art lessons to come up with new and creative solutions?
  3. Do you have ideas for entirely new solutions based on your research?

Slide 6 - Slide

Unintended Consequences?
When proposing possible solutions, you should also think about unintended consequences. These are the surprising results of actions that were meant to do something good, but end up causing new problems.

Write down atleast one unintended consequence for each solution.

Slide 7 - Slide

Selecting the Best Solutions?
Having analyzed the causes and unintended consequences, you should now be able to determine which solutions are best suited to help address your local issue.

Slide 8 - Slide

Homework
  • Think of at least 3 solutions.
  • For each solution, describe which causes it solves.
  • Choose one solution as the best solution.
  • Briefly explain why you think this is the best possible solution.
