LESSON GOALS
- How does insulation work
- How do we heat up a house and a body
- How can we use geothermal energy
Slide 6 - Slide
How do you keep warm?
Insulation
- People use a coat.
- Animals use their fur,
feathers or a layer of fat.
- We colse the door of a
heated room.
Slide 7 - Slide
Whales
- Layer of fat/ 'whale blubber'
- Tongue and fins are thinner,
because there is less fat.
- Blood is cooled down
when it goes to the tongue.
- The heat is passed to the cold blood returning back to the
body
Slide 8 - Slide
Heating up a house
Central heating can use natural gas or electricity.
Sun heats up a house.
A fireplace does the same.
Slide 9 - Slide
Slide 10 - Slide
Body
Food is the most important source of energy.
When you loose heat your body needs extra energy to stay at the right temperature.
Slide 11 - Slide
Geothermal energy
The temperature of the earth centre is about 5 500 C
The outer layers of the earth act as insulation.
On average the temperature increases by 3 C for every 100 m.
Iceland -
uses geothermal energy as an energysource.
Slide 12 - Slide
Which is NOT an energy source?
A
Food
B
Alcohol
C
Central heating system
D
Petrol

Rules: No discussion
When you are done-
Look for more information online about the role of geothermal energy
Slide 18 - Slide
Conclusion
Insulation prevents heat loss
Energy sources provide energy
Energy sources are: the Sun, fuels such as natural gas, wood and petrol, and also food
