Reproduction
Hormones part 1

Slide 1 - Slide

Learning objectives
  • Describe what hormones are and how they are transported through the body
  • Describe the hormonal system in males and females related to reproduction
  • Describe the effect and importance of negative feedback
  • Describe what happens during the phases of the menstrual cycle and how it is regulated by hormones

Slide 2 - Slide

What do you know about hormones?

Slide 3 - Slide

Hormones
Chemical messengers (proteins or steroid molecules) that are secreted by hormone glands and transported with the blood. Therefore each hormone ends up everywhere in the body.
They connect to receptors on or inside of the cells of the target organ(s) and trigger a response.

Slide 4 - Slide

Hormone gland
Blood
Target organ
Produce and secrete the hormone. Can be far from target organ. They always produce small amounts.
Blood travels throughout the entire body, therefore the hormones will end up everywhere.
The cells of the target organ have receptors the hormones can bind to and trigger a response
Example:
Pancreas produces insuline

Transported everywhere in the body

Mainly liver and muscle cells to stimulate the uptake of glucose

Slide 6 - Slide

How come organs don't respond to all hormones that pass by with the blood?

Slide 9 - Slide

Negative feedback
The hormone that is produced inhibits (decreases) its own production.
This creates a balance in hormone levels.

Testosterone inhibits the hypothalamus
and pituitary gland which slows down its
own production

Questions
What do FSH and LH stimulate in men?
What are their respective target cells and where are they situated?
What hormones are produced by these target cells and what is their effect?
Because of an inflammation one of the sperm ducts in a  male is closed off. What happens with the testosterone levels?

Questions
When does the menstrual cycle start?
In which part of the female reproductive system do the ova (egg cells) develop?
On which day in the cycle does ovulation on average occur and what hormone is causing ovulation?
Why is it on average?
What is shed during the menstruation of a female?

Questions
Luteinizing Hormone (LH) is produced by the ..?
The effects of estrogen on the production of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is an example of...?
The corpus luteum is mainly responsible for the production of..?
Progesterone inhibits ...... and stimulates......?
Which hormone is secreted in large quantities by the follicle in the follicular phase?

Slide 18 - Slide

Write down for yourself and learn:
Different stages of the menstrual cycle.
FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone.
Produced where, target organ?
Functions for each hormone.
At what moment in the menstrual cycle are the levels high?
What are the positive effects and what are the negative (feedback) effects?
