 Meaning: Are rules that are put in place to ensure a product, event, group, etc, is safe and not dangerous.

We're going to watch a clip that talks about safety.
Listen carefully, and see what more you will learn about safety regulations!

Exercise 4 — Dirty Dozen (Human factors) 
1. Why do we study human factors?
Because we want to know what could go wrong, since you cannot just stop your airplane at the side of the road if something goes wrong. 
2. What is the problem with being tired when you work a night shift?
We overestimated how well we can handle our fatigue. 
3. How should you handle distraction?
Recognize that you were distracted and double-check your work.

4. What is meant with ‘lack of assertiveness’?
That people don’t speak up when they feel something went wrong or doesn’t meet our own standards.
5. What does complacency mean?
Feeling very good and uncritical about your own achievements. This is overconfidence, which can be caused by boredom or stress, for example.
6. How big of a percentage of a message that we are trying to get across is actually received correctly by our co-workers?

  • Exercise 3: Write an article that gives people advice on what protective clothing to wear to prevent accidents. (p.106)
  • Exercise 5: Make a short video (with your phone) to explain what onme of the dirty dozen means. The video should be at least 3 min long. (p. 109)
