What is a city?
  • A city has four characteristics:
  1. A certain number of residents (differs by country)
  2. A high population density
  3. A high building density often with high-rise buildings
  4. A wide range of amenities around the city

Types of cities
  • Megacity: more than 10 million residents
  • Global city/world city: many residents and is an important economic, cultural and political centre for much of the world.
  • Capital city: usually the most important city in a country

  • A city’s location is never random. Three factors play a role: 
  1. Characteristics of the area in which a city is located.
  2. Characteristics of the location in relation to other places.
  3. The colonial past.

Urbanisation
  • Urbanisation has two causes:
  1. Migration from the countryside to the city --> rise of industrialisation.
  2. Natural population growth.
  • Suburbanisation is the urbanisation of the countryside around a central city --> suburbs & commuting
