A certain number of residents (differs by country)
A high population density
A high building density often with high-rise buildings
A wide range of amenities around the city

Megacity: more than 10 million residents
Global city/world city: many residents and is an important economic, cultural and political centre for much of the world.
Capital city: usually the most important city in a country

A city’s location is never random. Three factors play a role:
Characteristics of the area in which a city is located.
Characteristics of the location in relation to other places.
The colonial past.

has two causes:
Migration from the countryside to the city --> rise of
industrialisation.
Natural population growth.
Suburbanisation is the urbanisation of the countryside around a central city -->
suburbs & commuting
