Tag questions

positive sentence = negative tag

negative sentence = positive tag

Tag questions

positive sentence = negative tag

He is the youngest, isn't he?

negative sentence = positive tag

She isn't happy, is she?

Korte vragen (tag questions)

Tag questions komen aan het einde  van een zin te staan. 

Je gebruikt de tags om iemands mening  te vragen of 

om een bevestiging  te vragen.

Bijvoorbeeld:

She is very nice, isn't she?

Zij is erg aardig, toch?

1. Herhaal de vorm van 'to be' (am/are/is)  

Is de zin positief (+), dan wordt de tag question negatief (-)     

Is de zin negatief (-), dan wordt de tag question positief (+)    (+) Lisa  is late for school, isn't  she?  (-) 

       (-)  Lisa  isn't  late for school, is  she? (+)

       (+) We  are  late for school, aren't  we? (-) 

       (-) They  aren't  late for school, are  they? (+)

Er is één uitzondering:

I AM always happy, AREN'T I?

AMN'T BESTAAT NIET!

2 Herhaal ook de vorm van can en have got /has got

3 Als er géén am, are, is & can & have got/has got in de zin staat, dan gebruik je do of does 

They   hate  maths, don't  they?

Lisa   loves  pizza, doesn't  she?

You   know   him,  don't   you?

You  have  a problem,  don't  you?

They  don't  like maths, do they?

Lisa  doesn't  like pizza, does she?

It isn't the same as European football, ..... ......?

There are big differences between the two games, ..... .....?

You don't play Canadian football, ... ...?

Ice hockey is a popular sport in Canada, .... ....?

Your Canadian friend John doesn't call it ice hockey, ..... .....?

Canadians just call it hockey, ..... ..... ?

Field hockey and hockey aren't the same sport, ..... .....?

Tag question practice

• Put the words on the next slides in the right order and add the correct question tag.
  
• Make sure to use the correct verb tense (think of the shit-rule)

Example: you / not like / baseball

Correct answer: You don't like baseball, do you? 

Explanation: There is no auxiliary verb in the sentence, so you use do/don't in the question tag.
