  • Werkwoord+ed     (watched, called, talked)
  • 2e rijtje bij onregelmatige werkwoorden      (was, rang, wrote)
  • Did + (not) + hele werkwoord bij vragen en ontkenningen

Iets was in het verleden aan de gang  (kun je vaak vertalen met 'aan het ...')
  • At 11 o'clock, I was still doing my homework.
  • Rick was sleeping when the teacher came in.

Iets aan de hand (past continuous) en iets anders onderbreekt (past simple):     "I was walking when a tree suddenly fell."

2 activiteiten gebeuren op zelfde moment in verleden (past continuous):             "While my brothers were playing, I was studying."

2 activiteiten gebeuren na elkaar in het verleden (past simple):
    "The cat came up to me and began to meow."
