Past perfect continuous
What is a past perfect continuous?
  • express three things: 

1. Something happened in the past...
2. ...it happened before something else in the past...
3. ...it took a while, happened again and again, or it was annoying how long it took

Past perfect continuous
  • Other part of the sentence: past simple (yesterday's class)
  • Form: had + been + verb + -ing

Examples: 
1. When the bus finally arrived, I had been waiting for an hour.
2. We had been trying to open the door for five minutes when       Jane found her key.
