Slide 7 - Quiz

Immune system?

Slide 8 - Mind map

The immune system
Protects against foreign bodies/ pathogens
 Pathogens = viruses and bacteria

Infection = when a pathogen enters the body

Slide 9 - Slide

Pathogen
Contains DNA (inside)

Has antigens (on the outside)

Slide 10 - Slide

Slide 11 - Slide

Slide 12 - Slide

Natural immunity
1. A pathogen enters your body.
2. You get sick.
3. Your body makes antibodies.
4. You get better.
5. The white blood cells "remember" how these antibodies were made.
6. The next time the pathogen enters, antibodies are made immediately in large amounts.
7. You are immune.
8. Example: Chicken pox

Slide 13 - Slide

Artificial immunity
1.  Otherwise known as vaccination.
2. You receive a dead or weakened pathogen via an injection. This is known as a vaccine.
3. Specific white blood cells make antibodies.
4. You get a little bit sick.
5. When the pathogen enters again, your bodies make antibodies immediately and in large amounts.
6. You are immune and will not get sick.

Slide 14 - Slide

Slide 15 - Slide

Allergic reaction
Allergy - hypersensitive to a particular substance
(food, perfume, dust mites, pollen, etc.)
Causes an immune response in your immune system
- redness, skin rash, burning sensation

Slide 16 - Slide

Anaphylactic response
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Leads to swollen mucous membranes, thick lips, red blotches shortness of breath
  • Blood vessels can dilate (expand) and blood pressure drops
  • dangerous or fatal if not treated
  • EpiPen - counteracts the anaphylactic response

Slide 17 - Slide

Which substance from your blood plays an important part in your immune system?
A
Red blood cells
B
White blood cells
C
Platelets
D
Plasma proteins

Slide 18 - Quiz

A molecule found on the outer surface of cells that the immune system recognises as either part of the body or an outside invader.
A
Aids
B
Antigen
C
Antibodies
D
Disease

Slide 19 - Quiz

The figure is a schematic drawing showing two antigens, P and Q, and an antibody.

Which antigen will the antibody attach to: P or Q?
A
Antigen P
B
Antigen Q
