1. Before the police arrived, the criminal had fled the scene.
Hier toont de Past Perfect ('had fled') dat de actie van het vluchten plaatsvond vóór een ander verleden moment (de aankomst van de politie).

2. She had locked the doors before she went to bed.
De actie van het op slot doen ('had locked') is voltooid vóór een andere actie in het verleden (naar bed gaan).

3. They had never seen such a chaotic courtroom before that day.
'Had never seen' geeft aan dat tot aan dat specifieke punt in het verleden, de ervaring van het zien van een chaotische rechtbank niet had plaatsgevonden.

4. The jury had reached a verdict by the time the trial resumed after lunch.
'Had reached' laat zien dat de jury tot een besluit kwam vóór een specifiek moment in het verleden (de hervatting van het proces).
