Explanation of past simple, past continuous and past perfect

Past simple

Iets wat in het verleden is gebeurd en is afgerond

Vaak met een woord dat aangeeft dat het in het verleden was, zoals: yesterday, last week, in 2012

He played his first international match in 2012

Past continuous

Was/were + ww + ing

Iets wat in het verleden bezig was en een tijdje duurde

Je kan het ook gebruiken als twee dingen tegelijkertijd gebeurden

He was watching a tennis match when his friend called

Past perfect

Have/had  + voltooid deelwoord

Gebeurd het vroegst in het verleden

Signaalwoorden: ever, never, until now, lately, since (+tijd), for (+tijd), (not) yet

The All Blacks had performed before they broke up
