What is a short story?

Elements of a short story

Characters : protagonist /antagonist,  who are in your story?

Setting : where does your story take place and when? Period and location.

Theme : why does the author write the story?  Love,  good vs evil, courage...etc.

Tone : overall feeling of the story.  Mystery, nostalgic, romantic.. etc.

Point of view : who is telling the story? The writer or a character in the story?

Conflict : a problem that drives a story's plot forward. It keeps the characters from achieving their goal. 

Plot: series of events that take place in the story.  Beginning, middle and end.

Reading + Listening Assignment:

You will listen to and read the short story "The Moustache". During the reading, you will write down unfamiliar words. 

Who is the protagonist in "The Moustache" and who is the antagonist? Explain in your own words.

What type of setting did the short story take place in? Also, mention the type of mood in the story which the main character endured.

Exposition: Why did Mike's mother not want him to have a mustache?
