What is a short story?

Elements of a short story
Characters : protagonist /antagonist,  who are in your story?
Setting : where does your story take place and when? Period and location.
Theme : why does the author write the story?  Love,  good vs evil, courage...etc.
Tone : overall feeling of the story.  Mystery, nostalgic, romantic.. etc.
Point of view : who is telling the story? The writer or a character in the story?
Conflict : a problem that drives a story's plot forward. It keeps the characters from achieving their goal. 
Plot: series of events that take place in the story.  Beginning, middle and end.
